World leaders close in on financial reform deal
by Andrew Gully PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania (AFP) –
World leaders closed in on a deal to tighten financial regulations following last year’s meltdown, with China signaling emerging countries could be granted more clout on the IMF.
At the Group of 20 summit of major economies in Pittsburgh, there was broad agreement Thursday on curbing bankers’ bonuses and a Chinese central bank official predicting a deal on International Monetary Fund voting rights.
Xie Duo told journalists that developing countries had for too long been under-represented in international financial institutions like the IMF.
“We believe that at tomorrow’s summit a very important political decision will be made on this matter,” he added, on the sidelines of the summit.
G20 leaders have pledged to work for a comprehensive IMF reform and there is a long-term consensus on the need to address imbalances in v…

Queen Elizabeth told crisis sprung from ‘denial’
LONDON (AFP) –
Eminent economists have told Queen Elizabeth II that the global financial downturn was brought about by a “psychology of denial” among the financial and political elite, a report said Sunday.
In a three-page letter, the experts said “financial wizards” completely failed to “foresee the timing, extent and severity” of the credit crunch, according to The Observer newspaper, which said it had obtained a copy of the letter.
The letter was signed by political historian Peter Hennessy, and Tim Besley, a London School of Economics (LSE) professor and an external member of the Bank of England’s monetary policy committee.
It spoke of the “psychology of denial” that gripped the political and financial world in the build-up to the crisis.
The economists said financial experts convinced themselves and the world’s politicians that they had found clever ways to sprea…

Bad Credit Personal Loans Primer
One of the most sought after loan products is the bad credit personal loan. It makes sense because people who have bad credit would love to have the conveniences of a personal loan. However, most of the options available to people with top-notch credit will not be within reach of someone with bad credit. Bad credit customers have already cost the banks money at some point, so they’re not always willing to overlook this fact when making new loan offerings.
Still, most people can still acquire some sort of personal loan even though they have poor credit. It will just depend on their persistence and knowledge of how the banking system works. Banks need customers, just like any other company in any industry. Therefore they have to lend to people. Not all banks will have options for customers with less than perfect credit, but some will.

Economy sinks, Internet fraud rises
WASHINGTON, April 1 (UPI) –
Internet fraud reported to a U.S. government clearinghouse was up one-third last year over 2007, officials report.
John Kane, research director for the Internet Crime Complaint Center, suggested the economic slump may be to blame, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Tuesday. He said job loss and the battered stock market make some people more vulnerable to fraudulent get-rich-quick schemes, while others hit by hard times turn to crime.
“You have a large population of potential victims … who might not otherwise fall for these scams at a time when they’re personal
financial situation was a little bit better,” Kane said.
The center reported Monday that it received 275,284 complaints during the year, with losses totaling $265 million, the BBC reported. The two most common complaints were goods ordered and paid for on line and not received and Internet auction fraud, followed by credit card fraud.
