Coloring, or makeup, provides gender cues
MONTREAL, May 30 (UPI) –
The brain is wired to identify gender based on facial cues and coloring, which may explain why women wear makeup, Canadian researchers said.
Psychology Professor Frederic Gosselin and his University of Montreal team found the luminescence of the eyebrow and mouth region is vital in rapid gender discrimination.
As teenagers, dimorphism — systematic difference between sexes — increases in the nose, chin, mouth, jaw, eyes and general shape of faces,
lead author Nicolas Dupuis-Roy said in a statement. Yet we aren’t conscious of how our brain recognizes those differences.
The researchers showed photos of 300 Caucasian faces to some 30 participants. Subjects were asked to identify gender based on images in which parts of faces were concealed.
The study, published in the Journal of Vision, found that eyes and mouths are paramount in identifying gender. The investigation found the shades of reds and greens around mouths and eyes led t…

VA golf course greens fees said embezzled
LOS ANGELES, May 30 (UPI) –
A nine-hole golf course at a Veterans Affairs hospital in California has been closed because of suspected embezzlement of greens fees.
VA officials say they are looking for an outside operator to handle the course, which was open to the public, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday. The course has been closed since March 30.
As much as $200,000 may be missing, the Times said, citing people familiar with the matter.
Members of the Hillcrest Country Club created the par-3 course at the VA Medical Center in the Brentwood neighborhood of Los Angeles for the benefit of World War II vets. Terry Gray, a Vietnam veteran, restored the course in the 1990s, although the clubhouse is still a Quonset hut.
Ralph Tillman, who is in charge of the medical center’s physical plant, said the course is still being used by patients at the medical center and veterans groups. But he said the medical center has no system at the moment to collect greens fees from t…

MLB: Atlanta 10, Arizona 6
PHOENIX, May 30 (UPI) –
Yunel Escobar and pitcher Jair Jurrjens highlighted an early Atlanta offensive explosion Friday and the Braves went on to outslug Arizona 10-6.
The Braves scored 10 runs over the first four innings, allowing Jurrjens to run his unbeaten streak to seven straight starts.
Jurrjens has only a 5-2 record, however, due to a lack of run support. That was not the case Friday, thanks to a 13-hit attack that featured a key blow by Jurrjens in the second inning.
He delivered a three-run double as part of a four-run inning and Escobar came through with a three-run homer during Atlanta’s five-run third.
Jurrjens gave up eight hits and five runs over five innings and left with a 10-5 advantage. The Braves ended a four-game losing streak.
Jon Garland (4-4) lasted just 2 2/3 innings, surrendering eight runs on nine hits.
Chad Tracy hit a three-run homer and finished with four RBI for the Diamondbacks.

Labor could run 3rd in European elections
LONDON, May 30 (UPI) –
The Labor Party might run third in next week’s European elections in what would be a major blow for Prime Minister Gordon Brown, a poll released Friday said.
The most striking change in the poll for The Times of London was the rise of the United Kingdom Independence Party to second place. Other smaller parties like the Greens and British National Party also made gains.
Thirty percent of those polled by Populus said they would vote for a Conservative candidate, 19 percent picked the UKIP — which gained 13 percent from a poll a month ago — 16 percent preferred Labor, 12 percent the Liberal Democrats, 10 percent the Greens and 5 percent the BNP.
The poll suggested Labor has suffered the most from the scandal over expense claims by members of Parliament, with the Liberal Democrats taking a big hit as well.
The Conservatives’ numbers have dropped slightly, even though several high-profile Conservatives have been tarnished, but the party is in a st…

MLB: Seattle 5, Los Angeles Angels 2
ANAHEIM, Calif., May 30 (UPI) –
Jason Vargas turned in another outstanding effort Friday and Seattle gave him enough run support to lift the Mariners past the Los Angeles Angels 5-2.
Vargas (2-0) was called up from the minors in early May and prior to Friday had allowed only three earned runs in 21 innings over three starts and two relief appearances.
He gave up four runs on two hits in 6 1/3 innings against the Angels and evened his career record over parts of four major league seasons at 8-8.
Three Seattle relievers allowed one hit over the final 2 2/3 innings, with David Aardsma collecting his seventh save.
The Mariners took a 3-0 lead in the third on RBI singles from Ichiro Suzuki and Adrian Beltre along with a sacrifice fly from Ken Griffey Jr.
Jose Lopez hit a solo homer for Seattle in the eighth.
John Lackey (1-1) worked 7 1/3 innings in the loss. He allowed five runs on 10 hits.
Juan Rivera hit a solo homer for the Angeles, who fell back…

Schwarzenegger plans $2.8B more in cuts
SACRAMENTO, May 30 (UPI) –
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called for $2.8 billion more in cuts from California’s budget in a move his finance director said scraped the bottom of the barrel.
The governor put forward $21 billion in cuts last week. He is struggling with a $24 billion gap between tax revenues and spending forecast by state economists, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Schwarzenegger’s latest proposal digs even deeper into vital areas, the newspaper said. Schools would lose $680 million, although some of that might be restored if revenues do not fall as steeply as predicted, and social safety program would lose $1 billion.
Another $470 million would come from cutting state employee salaries 5 percent. Transportation would lose more than $550 million, including $315 million for mass transit.
We really scraped the bottom of the barrel here, Finance Director Mike Genest said. We cut everything we could think of. … It’s unfortunate, but it is wha…

MLB: Colorado 3, San Diego 0
DENVER, May 30 (UPI) –
Jason Marquis and Huston Street combined on a six-hit shutout Friday, carrying the Houston Astros to a 3-0 blanking of San Diego.
Marquis (7-3) gave up all six hits and struck out six while throwing just 103 pitches over eight innings.
Jim Tracy, managing his first game for the Rockies, then made his first big decision on the job by calling on Street to finish off the game. Street needed nine pitches to work a perfect inning and grab his eighth save.
Tracy was named manager earlier in the day when the Rockies dismissed Clint Hurdle. Colorado had lost its previous three games.
Yorvit Torrealba had an RBI single in the second, producing the only earned run of the game.
With the bases loaded in the sixth, Torrealba reached on third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff’s two-out fielding error, a miscue that allowed two runs to score.
Chris Young (4-3) was the hard-luck loser, giving up an earned run on just two hits in six innings.

MLB: New York Yankees 3, Cleveland 1
CLEVELAND, May 30 (UPI) –
Andy Pettitte limited Cleveland to a run over five innings Friday and the New York Yankees held on to defeat the Indians 3-1.
Cleveland had a four-game winning streak snapped and the Yankees jumped past Boston to take a half-game lead in the American League East.
Pettitte (5-1) took a shutout into the sixth inning, but gave up a single and a walk to start the frame and was relieved by Alfredo Aceves. Aceves allowed one of the inherited runners to score on a sacrifice fly, but then slammed the door on the Indians through the eighth.
Mariano Rivera came on in the ninth and worked his way around a leadoff single to pick up his 10th save.
Derek Jeter singled in a run in the second and a ground-ball out later in the inning by Mark Teixeira drove in Brett Gardner from third.
Nick Swisher’s sacrifice fly in the third accounted for the last New York run.
Cliff Lee (2-6) surrendered all three runs on nine hits in six innings to take the…

US court likely to rule Monday on Chrysler-Fiat
by Sebastian Smith NEW YORK (AFP) –
A US court will likely rule Monday on whether to allow the sale of US auto giant Chrysler to a group led by Italy’s Fiat, the presiding judge said.
Speaking Friday at the close of three days of marathon hearings, Judge Arthur Gonzalez said: “My plan is to issue an opinion sometime Monday.”
Gonzalez, at the US Bankruptcy Court, said if his opinion was “ready before Monday it will be issued at that time, but it will be in all likelihood Monday.”
He had been widely expected to rule Friday after lawyers backing and opposing the US-government-crafted rescue plan for Chrysler plan completed their final arguments.
The third biggest US automaker has declared bankruptcy and is seeking a tie-up with Fiat in a plan presented as the only w…

Robert Pattinson And Erika Dutra
CANNES, France, May 29 (TOTI) –
Robert Pattinson has been very tough to pin down when it comes to who he’s dating. But a series of pictures in the newest edition of Life and Style seem to shed some light on the issue.
Rob Pattinson, 23, wearing a dark suit and tie is smoking cigarettes and laughing with LA blond Erika Dutra. The two seem to be having the time of their lives, and enjoying a night on the town.
Earlier that night on May 21, Pattinson auctioned off two kisses for $28,000 at the amfAR Cinema Against Aids benefit in Cannes. Robert didn’t charge Dutra for the same benefit later that evening.
Robert rolled into the Eden Roc Bar and chatted up Dutra, who he had been introduced to by a mutual friend.
“Erika was introduced to Robert by a mutual friend at the beginning of the night,” an …
