Aloe – The Wonder Plant

without comments

Aloe Vera has been used over many centuries by many different cultures for its medicinal properties. Ancient Greeks, Romans, Babylonians, Indians and Chinese have all attested to its healing powers and over the years Aloe (Aloinae) has acquired a number of ‘labels’, among them: Wand of Heaven, Heaven’s Blessing, Potted Physician, Plant of Life and Wonder Plant.

Around 300 different types of Aloe Vera have been identified, but just these five have recognised medical benefits: Barbadensis Miller, Perryi Baker, Arborescens, Ferox and Saponaria. As well as being the most potent, Aloe Barbadensis Miller is the most widely used. Having come far from its African origins, it is now grown in suitably warm, dry climates worldwide.

Here’s an interesting quote from Mahatma Gandhi:

He knows what it looks like. I think I’ve e-mailed him enough pictures.”

Kim Kardashian is currently starring in the reality TV show Keeping Up With The Kardashians.

Reggie Bush is star player for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League.

BASF first quarter profit falls by 68 percent

without comments

FRANKFURT (AFP) –

BASF, the world’s leading chemicals group, posted on Thursday a 68-percent drop in first quarter net profit to 375 million euros (499 million dollars) owing to “persistently weak demand.”

A gloomy but direct BASF statement said core earnings shed 58 percent to 985 million euros, on sales that lost 23 percent to 12.2 billion euros amid a global economic slump.

Responding to what the group called “an extremely difficult environment,” BASF said it “will cut at least 2,000 positions by the end of 2009.”

It had already warned of at least 1,500 job cuts this year, but said Thursday that it “will restructure and, where necessary, close or sell plants and sites that cannot ensure the company?s long-term competitiveness.”

“BASF is facing enormous challenges in 2009,” the statement said, adding that demand for chemical products, used widely in the distressed …

SAN FRANCISCO, April 30 (UPI) –

Bengie Molina drove in four runs and finished a double short of the cycle Wednesday, boosting San Francisco to a 9-4 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

NBA: Denver 107, New Orleans 86

without comments

DENVER, April 30 (UPI) –

J.R. Smith hit two 3-pointers during a third-period run Wednesday and Denver advanced to the second round of the playoffs by downing New Orleans 107-86.

The Hornets, victims of an historic and embarrassing loss in the fourth game of the opening-round series, battled Denver on even terms through more than half of the fifth game.

Denver, however, ran off 14 consecutive points while holding New Orleans scoreless for more than 4 minutes of the third quarter.

That led to the Nuggets winning a playoff series for the first time in 15 years. They will meet the Dallas in the second round, having defeated the Mavericks in all four of their regular-season meetings.

Carmelo Anthony led the way for Denver with 34 points, making 13-of-25 from the field. Smith had 20 and Kenyon Martin added 15.

Smith made a 3-point shot with 3:07 to play in the third period, giving Denver a 70-62 lead. He hit another one 30 seconds later for a 15-point advantage.

Georgia killer executed

without comments

JACKSON, Ga., March 11 (UPI) –

A 65-year-old man who spent 21 1/2 years on Georgia’s death row for killing a neighbor was executed by lethal injection Tuesday night.

Robert Newland was pronounced dead at the state prison at Jackson at 7:35 p.m., about 13 minutes after the injection was administered, The Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville reported.

Newland was convicted in the May 1986 stabbing death of Carol Sanders Beatty, 27, on St. Simons Island. Authorities said he had been drinking heavily and tried to rape Beatty before fatally wounding her as she tried to fight him off.

But before she died at a hospital, she identified Newland as her assailant. Though she couldn’t speak, she nodded affirmatively to each correct letter as a police detective recited the alphabet: N-E-W-L-A. He then asked if the name was Newland and she nodded again and squeezed his hand. She died within hours.

I was drunk, I don’t know why I did it, he told authorities when arrested. <Q…

Wild horses shot to death in Canada

without comments

SUNDRE, Alberta, April 30 (UPI) –

A pregnant mare and two other wild horses were found shot to death near Sundre, Alberta, Canadian authorities said.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Wednesday the animals were discovered Tuesday night about 550 yards from a mountain road near the Mountain Aire Lodge motel and campground, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

For the first time in a long time, I actually cried this morning, said Bob Henderson, president of the Wild Horses of Alberta Society. It hurts your heart when you watch them out there, the way that they are and live out there. They’re such a beautiful, magnificent animal, and to see this needless, senseless act just sickens the heart.

More than 22 wild horses have been killed in Alberta in the past four years. The society is offering a reward for information leading to those responsible.

There are about 300 feral horses in the Sundre area. They originated from domestic horses used in log…
