NHL: Phoenix 6, Dallas 5 (OT)

without comments

GLENDALE, Ariz., March 31 (UPI) –

Petr Prucha’s power-play goal 53 seconds into overtime Monday gave the Phoenix Coyotes a 6-5 win over Dallas.

Scottie Upshall and Enver Lisin scored two goals apiece for the Coyotes, who have won just five of their last 16 games and face elimination from playoff contention. Prucha, Matthew Lombardi and Viktor Tikhonov had two assists each and Ilya Bryzgalov finished with 18 saves.

Brendan Morrison had a goal and an assist, Mike Ribeiro had three assists, and Tobias Stephan made 27 saves for Dallas — which has lost a season-high seven straight and further eroded its already slim chance of seeing post-season action. The Stars trail St. Louis by eight points for the eighth and final playoff berth.

Down 5-3 in the third period, the Stars mounted a challenge, getting goals from Chris Conner and Darryl Sydor — with Sydor’s coming with less than 58 seconds in regulation to force overtime.

The Coyotes had the man advantage in overtime aft…

CALGARY, Alberta, March 31 (UPI) –

Evgeni Nabokov stopped 28 shots and Dany Boyle and Jonathan Cheechoo scored goals Monday to give the San Jose Sharks a 2-1 win over Calgary.

Joe Thornton had assists on both goals in the Sharks’ second straight victory.

Jarome Iginla scored Miikka Kiprusoff finished with 15 saves for the Flames, who lost for the third time in four games.

The victory gives the Sharks 111 points and a four-point lead over the idle Detroit Red Wings for the best record in the NHL.

Despite the loss, Calgary leads the Northwest Division with 92 points — but its lead over second-place Vancouver is just one point. Calgary has six regular-season games to play while the Canucks have seven.

Boyle opened the scoring at 6:11 of the first period with the Sharks enjoying a two-man advantage. The Flames got the equalizer when Iginla scored from the left circle at 15:09 of the first.

Cheechoo picked up a carom of a Brad Lukowich shot and scored the …

Death from colon cancer preventable

with one comment

LOS ANGELES, March 31 (UPI) –

Improvements in prevention, early detection and treatment have greatly reduced the death toll from colon cancer, a U.S. researcher says.

While colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in the United States, it is the most preventable major cancer, Dr. Randolph Hecht of the University of California, Los Angeles, says in a statement.

Hecht and colleagues said any persistent symptoms — blood in the stool, a change in bowel habits, weight loss, narrower-than-usual stools, abdominal pains — should be reported to a doctor.

Researchers advise those at normal risk to begin having regular colorectal cancer screenings beginning at age 50. However, those with a personal or family history of colorectal cancer, other cancers or inflammatory bowel disease should talk to their doctor about starting screening sooner.

To lower colon cancer risk Hecht suggests:

– Maintain healthy weight by eating a low-fat diet tha…

EU-US tensions ahead of G20 regulation push

without comments

BRUSSELS (AFP) –

European countries are pushing for the G20 summit to focus on revamping the global financial architecture, but clashes with Washington have overshadowed their drive.

Transatlantic tensions over the focus of the summit have marked the run-up to the April 2 meeting in London, which is supposed to be a demonstration of top-level unity between the world’s leading economic powers.

European leaders have repeatedly rebuffed US pressure to plough more money into their ailing economies as part of an international effort to revive withering global demand.

The dispute turned ugly last week when Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek, whose country holds the rotating EU presidency, described the United States’ ambitious but costly economic stimulus plans as “a way to hell.”

He also said “the United States is not on the right path” with its costly stimulus plans, an…

1 million pounds of pistachios recalled

without comments

WASHINGTON, March 31 (UPI) –

Federal officials say a California processor will recall about 1 million pounds of pistachio products due to concern over possible salmonella contamination.

The Food and Drug Administration said Monday that Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, based in the Central Valley town of Terra Bella, Calif., would recall its 2008 crop after learning that one of its customers had detected salmonella during a routine examination, The Washington Post reported Tuesday.

The customer, Kraft Foods, notified the FDA of the discovery March 24.

No illnesses have been associated with Terra Bella pistachios but two customer complaints were being investigated, the newspaper said.

The Setton pistachio products were shipped in lots of 1,000 and 2,000 pounds to about three dozen wholesalers, who then repackaged them for sale to other customers. Dr. David Acheson, associate FDA commissioner for foods, said the recall is likely to be expanded as pistachios are tracked …

‘Polypill’ combines heart medications

without comments

HAMILTON, Ontario, March 31 (UPI) –

A polypill that combines blood pressure drugs, a cholesterol-lowering statin, aspirin and folic acid may minimize heart attacks, Canadian researchers say.

Dr. Koon Teo of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, says the polypill could reduce cardiovascular events by more than 80 percent in healthy people.

In a double-blind trial in 50 centers in India, 2,053 people without cardiovascular disease — ages 45-80 and with one risk factor — were randomly assigned to the Polycap. It consisted of low doses of the drugs: 12.5 mg. thiazide, 50 mg atenolol, 5 mg ramipril, 20 mg simvastatin and 100 mg aspirin per day.

Subjects were otherwise assigned to eight other groups, each with about 200 individuals, of aspirin alone, simvastatin alone, hydrochlorthiazide alone, three combinations of the two blood-pressure-lowering drugs, three blood-pressure-lowering drugs alone, or three blood-pressure-lowering drugs plus aspirin.

Compared w…

Caffeine reduces pain some in heavy users

without comments

CHAMPAIGN, Ill., March 31 (UPI) –

Caffeine-naive individuals and habitual users have the same amount of reduction in pain during exercise after caffeine consumption, U.S. researchers say.

University of Illinois kinesiology and community health professor Robert Motl said the study’s 25 participants were fit, college-age males divided into two distinct groups — subjects whose everyday caffeine consumption was extremely low to non-existent and those with an average caffeine intake of about 400 milligrams a day — the equivalent of three to four cups of coffee.

After completing an initial exercise test in the lab on an ergometer, or stationary cycle, subjects returned for two monitored high-intensity, 30-minute exercise sessions.

An hour prior to each session, cyclists, who had been instructed not to consume caffeine during the prior 24-hour period, were given a pill. On one occasion, it contained a dose of caffeine measuring 5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight — equiva…
