Face of moral disgust has primitive roots

without comments

TORONTO, Feb. 28 (UPI) –

University of Toronto researchers say they’ve found a link between moral disgust and disgust related to unpleasant tastes.

While morality is considered a pinnacle of human evolution, disgust is a primitive emotion that played a key role in evolutionary survival, researchers said.

Our research shows the involvement of disgust in morality, suggesting that moral judgment may depend as much on simple emotional processes as on complex thought, lead author Hanah Chapman, a graduate student in psychology, said Thursday in a release.

The research team found that people make similar facial movements when tasting unpleasant liquids or viewing disgusting objects as they did when they were subjected to unfair treatment in a laboratory game.

These results shed new light on the origins of morality, suggesting that not only do complex thoughts guide our moral compass, but also more primitive instincts related to avoiding potential toxins, psyc…

SACRAMENTO, Feb. 28 (UPI) –

Kevin Martin led six players in double figures with 20 points Friday night, boosting the Sacramento Kings to a 98-86 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Sacramento scored the last 10 points of the first period for a 27-18 lead and was not threatened the rest of the way.

Bobby Jackson had 18 and Andres Nocioni 17 for the Kings, who had lost their previous three games. It was the 13th victory of the season for Sacramento, tying the Kings with Oklahoma City for last place in that department.

NBA: Cleveland 97, San Antonio 86

without comments

SAN ANTONIO, Feb. 28 (UPI) –

A 30-point effort from LeBron James Friday sent Cleveland storming to a big lead and the Cavaliers coasted to a 97-86 win over San Antonio.

James, who was held without an assist for the first time in his career in a loss to Houston 24 hours earlier, had four of them against the Spurs. He made 12-of-23 shots, helping the Cavaliers build as much as a 23-point cushion with 3:30 to play.

Delonte West added 17 points and both Daniel Gibson and Zydrunas Ilgauskas had 10.

San Antonio, playing without Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan, did not have a player with more than 11 points. Duncan had hoped to play, but was held out because of continuing soreness in his right leg.

Cleveland won for the sixth time in seven games. The Spurs had a four-game winning streak snapped.

Mirrors tested as global warming block

without comments

LONDON, Feb. 28 (UPI) –

Scientists in North America and Britain are working on a massive sun shade they say could be used to stop global warming.

Roger Angel, an astronomer with the University of Arizona, has received funding from NASA to develop a canon that would fire trillions of mirrors into space to deflect the rays of the sun, Britain’s Telegraph newspaper reported Friday.

British inventor Tod Todeschini has been contracted to build a scaled-down version of the canon.

Angel said he expects to be ready to launch the mirrors within 20 to 30 years. Researchers at the University of Victoria, Canada are using computer simulations to test the sunshade theory, the report said.

DALLAS, Feb. 28 (UPI) –

Jason Kidd and Dirk Nowitzki scored all of Dallas’ 15 overtime points Friday, lifting the Mavericks to a 110-108 victory over Oklahoma City.

Nowitzki finished with 41 points and Kidd made four free throws during the final 10 seconds to secure the victory.

Oklahoma City almost pulled out a win despite playing most of the game without star forward Kevin Durant, the fourth-leading scorer in the NBA. He left in the first quarter with a sprained right ankle.

X-rays were negative, but he did not return.

The Mavericks trailed by 12 points in the fourth period before going on a 16-0 run to take the lead. Russell Westbrook got Oklahoma City into the overtime by hitting a 3-pointer with 17 seconds remaining.

Westbrook scored 33 points and Jeff Green had 28 for the Thunder, who have lost seven in a row.

Activists warn US lawmakers of uranium mining perils

without comments

WASHINGTON (AFP) –

A French physicist and a US actor have joined representatives of indigenous peoples from Africa, Australia and the United States to send US lawmakers a stark warning about the dangers of uranium mining.

“We want US lawmakers to understand that uranium mining is highly pollutant and that there is currently no scientific answer to the question of radioactive waste containment,” Bruno Chareyron of France’s CRIIRAD laboratory, which measures radioactivity in the environment, told AFP Friday.

“We want them to know that the information they are given by the mining companies is not wholly reliable,” he said.

Representatives of the Tuareg nomads of Niger, Native Americans and Australian aborigines told of the ravages of uranium mining on th…

CHICAGO, Feb. 28 (UPI) –

Evgeni Malkin scored a power-play goal 1:36 into overtime Friday night and the Pittsburgh Penguins overcame a hat trick by Jonathan Toews to defeat Chicago 5-4.

Chris Kunitz, acquired by the Penguins in a trade with Anaheim Thursday, had a goal and an assist in his Pittsburgh debut.

The Penguins improved to 4-1-1 since Dan Bylsma was named interim head coach. Marc-Andre Fleury earned the win with 41 saves.

Pittsburgh again played without captain Sidney Crosby, who suffered a groin injury Sunday. He was held out of Friday’s game after trying to go through a morning skate.

Chicago lost its third straight despite Toews producing the first hat trick of his NHL career. The Blackhawks came from two goals behind twice and forced the overtime when Dave Bolland scored with 4:45 to play in the third period.

Cristobal Huet opened the game in goal for Chicago and let in four of 22 shots through the first two periods. Antti Niemi stopped the first …

Jennifer Aniston Speaks Out On Angelina Jolie Brad Pitt Oscars Showdown

without comments

LOS ANGELES, Ca., Feb. 27 (TOTI) –

Sure, people were excited to see Slumdog Millionaire win some awards, but nearly everyone who peaked into the Oscars were watching the show to see if a catfight between Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston would erupt. People longed to see Brad Pitt forced to pull one woman off the other, proving once and for all where his devotion lies.

Unfortunately for us, the catfight never properly materialized. Four years after the marriage between Brad Pitt and Aniston dissolved (Jolie snatched Pitt from Aniston while the two were filming Mr and Mrs Smith in case you’ve been living in Bin Laden’s cave in the Middle East), the three Hollywood uber-celebs were in the same room at the same time for the first time.

The tension was so thick you could slice it with a butter knife.

Aniston ap…
